How to Look After Your Garden During a Heatwave

Looking after your garden during a heatwave

This week we’re seeing glorious sunshine and high temperatures, which while lovely for us to sunbathe in, doesn’t necessarily mean good news for your garden. Follow our top tips for looking after your garden during the hot weather to ensure your garden can be enjoyed for the rest of the Great British summer and you won’t be left with a yellow lawn for the rest of the season.

Water

An obvious first tip, but essential. Only water your garden when it’s cool, so either first thing in the morning or at night once the sun has gone down. Aim your hose or watering can at the soil, not the leaves or foliage, using a rose attachment and water the soil as wide as the canopy of the plant.

If your water butt is running low, you can recycle water from your washing up bowl and from your bath! Let the water cool down before using and it’s perfectly fine to use. Just remember not to use it on any fruits or vegetables that you won’t be cooking before eating.

Mulch

A layer of mulch on top of your borders provides a damp layer that locks in moisture and helps to prevent soil from drying out. Use mulch in pots and on your vegetable patch to keep plants happy and healthy.

There are many types of mulch to choose from, biodegradable options such as leaf mould, compost, wood chippings, straw and seaweed will gradually break down and release nutrients into the soil. Non-biodegradable mulches won’t improve the quality of your plants, but they will suppress weeds and look decorative. Options include slate, shingle, stone chippings or woven sheets.

Shade

Move pots and containers into the shade to protect them, or if they are too big and heavy to move – use shade netting or even net curtains to help keep them cool. Potted plants are often more fragile than they would be if planted in the ground and need a little extra attention. Give them a little plant feed with their watering to help keep them healthy.
