We recently completed this set of steel-framed concertina gates in the Unthank Road area of Norwich, combining a strong steel structure with traditional timber cladding.
It’s a type of gate we particularly like fitting because you get the strength and stability of a metal frame without losing the appearance of timber. For this installation, the concertina design also allowed us to divide the wide opening into several sections, creating a substantial set of gates that remain practical to open and close.
The main structure of each gate is manufactured from steel, providing a solid frame around the timber boards.
Once the frames were in position, the timber cladding created a much warmer appearance than a completely metal gate would have provided. From the outside, timber is the dominant feature, while the dark steel frame gives the installation a clean border and ties the individual sections together.
This combination works particularly well where someone wants the appearance and privacy of a timber game but needs something more substantial underneath.
As with any bespoke gate installation, getting the posts, hinges and individual sections lined up properly is important. With a concertina system, there are several moving sections rather than one gate leaf, so each part needs to work smoothly with the next.
We installed the supporting steelwork before hanging and aligning the individual gate sections. Once everything was operating correctly, we checked the gates across the full opening and made sure the finished installation was secure and ready for regular use.
The result is a substantial entrance with a relatively simple appearance: vertical timber boards, dark steel framing and heavy-duty gate furniture.
Steel-framed timber gates are a useful middle ground between traditional wooden gates and fully metal designs.
Timber gives the entrance a natural finish that works well alongside existing fencing and residential properties, while the steel frame provides the underlying strength and support. The frame also helps the gate retain its shape, which is particularly useful on larger installations.
For this project near Unthank Road, we think the two materials work especially well together. The finished gates provide plenty of privacy without looking overly industrial, despite the amount of steelwork underneath.
