Crossing the Norfolk - Suffolk Border

Norfolk Suffolk Border Map

Our name may be Norfolk Prestige Fencing, but did you know we cover parts of Suffolk too? We often work in the border towns like Bungay, Beccles and Lowestoft. Ipswich football club aside, we’re more than happy to cross the southern border for our Suffolk neighbours!

The Rivalry Explained!

We may joke about the Canaries and the Tractor Boys, but did you know the rivalry between our counties began 1,500 years ago in the 6th Century? During Anglo-Saxon times, the Kingdom of the East Angles (East Anglia) was founded, bringing together the North Folk (Norfolk) and the South Folk (Suffolk) who were Angles previously settled by the tribes of Iceni. The boundary between the groups was vague, with Thetford forest the only clear border. Disputes over land and many changes over diocese boundaries in the Middle Ages intensified the rivalry and continued it into more recent centuries.

The Deuchar Cup, a prestigious rowing competition held up until the 1950s, was fought by teams from across East Anglia and the local derby was a fierce but friendly rivalry. Of course, the sporting rivalry that dominates the region nowadays is between the Norwich and Ipswich football teams, the club that wins the derby is known as the Pride of Anglia. With only forty miles between us, and no other professional football clubs around, the rivalry is one of the fiercest in England and has been raging since the first derby in 1902.

Drawing the Line

A few years ago, tensions were flared when a government proposal suggested Lowestoft became a part of Norfolk, under plans to redraw county boundaries. Angry residents held protests and flag raising ceremonies, furious at the suggestion of ‘leaving’ Suffolk. Bemused Norfolkians joined in the call for sanity, and even local politicians joined the two sides in a shared mocking of them London types meddling in our business!

These days the rivalry isn’t much more than friendly banter and we all know the football jokes are harmless fun. We might build fences for a living, but you won’t catch us putting them along the border!
